Dr. Yu-Lan Lin, nominated by the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association, is currently the Senior Program Director of the World Languages Program of the Boston Public Schools. She began her 33-year career as an educator at the Josiah Quincy Elementary School in Boston in 1979 as a Cantonese kindergarten bilingual teacher. Four years later, she started the Mandarin program at Snowden High School, the very first and longest-running Chinese program offered by a public school in the state of Massachusetts. In 1997, she assumed her present responsibility as the district supervisor for world languages.
Dr. Lin has been involved in numerous state and national projects and initiatives that have had a direct and profound impact on the teaching and learning of world languages. She was instrumental in the development of the National Standards of Chinese Language in the late 90’s, and has twice participated in the development and subsequent revision of the Massachusetts Foreign Language Framework. She served on the Foreign Language National Assessment of Educational Progress Committee (NAEP) and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in World Languages Committee (NBPTS), and co-authored the CLASS Professional Standards for K-12 Chinese Language Teachers in 2007. Most recently, she has been actively involved in the College Board’s Advanced Placement Chinese Program, serving on its Curriculum Development and Assessment Task Force and serving as its national consultant.
The spectrum of Dr. Lin’s involvement on various boards includes: Past President of the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association, Past President and current Executive Director of the Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools (CLASS), Board of Directors of the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL), and Board of Directors on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
Dr. Lin is a deeply committed and tireless educator who frequently presents from local to international levels on various topics related to the improvement of language education. This dedication is exemplified by a number of prestigious awards that she has received throughout her career: the 2004 MaFLA Distinguished Service Award, the 2010 NECTFL Nelson Brooks Distinguished Services and Leadership Award, and the 2010 ACTFL Florence Steiner Award for Leadership in K-12 Foreign Language Education.
